Joey Crofoot
Joseph Simons
Joey Crofoot composes with a harmonic palette all his own. With a penchant for grunge-inspired chord progressions, altered guitar tunings, and extended harmonies, he is a refreshingly modern take on the folk singer-songwriter. His lyrics and melodies are usually bittersweet, frequently theatrical, and undeniably catchy.

Joey Crofoot grew up in a musical family with his mother, uncles, and brothers playing a myriad of musical styles. Walking in his childhood home you were equally likely to hear Brahms, Stephen Stills, or Alice in Chains–sometimes all at once from different rooms. Crofoot was lucky enough to grow up with a grand piano in his bedroom that he played incessantly. Whether it was picking out stray movie themes, Iron Maiden riffs, or part of a sonata his mother was working on, he developed a capacity to freely play whatever music was in his head.
After a brief teaching career, Joey Crofoot realized his true calling for music and spent a few years honing his craft before pursuing it full time. He started gigging live shows, often changing the instrumentation of his music and playing with a large variety of local musicians. He quickly moved online with weekly recurring video series of himself learning lead licks, covers, and breaking down the anatomy of songs. Crofoot currently resides in the Kansas City area and a spirit realm near you.

Colin is a singer-songwriter born in Anaheim, CA,but raised in Topeka, KS. Colin was surrounded by music from a young age, but didn’t begin writing and performing original music until after he had graduated from college. Colin picked up the guitar when he was a sophomore in high school and quickly became proficient in a variety of styles, incorporating fingerpicking, strumming and slide guitar into his music.
He also began experimenting with a looping pedal, layering live guitar parts and creating intricate soundscapes during his performances. His live performances and the buzz generated by those who have been lucky enough to see him play, are enough to get excited about the music that is yet to come.

Scurvy Rickets
Carlos Velez
Carlos has written songs and played in bands since high school (many, many moons ago). These days he makes music as Scurvy Rickets – singer-songwriter, rock, piano instrumentals, chamber and symphonic, hip hop and more. A writer and poet, he has published two books of writings, Secondhand Souls and CD: A Scurvy Rickets songbook. As the founder of Top City Records, he aims to invest in Topeka’s musicians and writers and help to grow a more involved community around Topeka’s many talented artists.

Jeremy Shane
Jeremy Swedlund
Jeremy was born and raised in Topeka. He grew up with a love of music and began playing drums practically before he could walk. Throughout his teenage years he performed with several bands as a percussionist and eventually a vocalist, finally picking up the guitar and trying his hand at songwriting as a young adult. His musical influences range from the Motown classics that his dad played for him as a young child, to the grunge and alternative music of his high school years, and the more acoustic driven folk sounds which are now common in the songs that he writes. In recent years, Jeremy has played with a trio project called Amber Waves and as a solo artist and is currently working on a slate of songs that he hopes to record as a solo E.P.

Don Bailey at Pretend Machine was our sound engineer for This Machine Builds Community. In addition to engineering all of Scurvy Rickets published music, he has worked with many local bands in the Northeast Kansas area. Recording, mixing, mastering, and Podcast editing.
